Hempcrete Eco House — Dorset
 

This self-build eco house was realised on a constrained, land-locked garden plot formed through subdivision of an existing property. From the outset, the project required a careful architectural response: one that addressed limited access, close neighbours, and local planning sensitivities, while still delivering a genuinely low-impact, high-performance home.
 

Planning approval was achieved through a measured design approach rooted in material intelligence and proportion. The building form, scale and massing were deliberately modest, shaped to sit quietly within its context. Daylight, privacy and outlook were carefully balanced to minimise impact on adjoining properties, while creating a calm, generous internal environment.

A fabric-first construction strategy underpinned the proposal. The house is formed from a timber frame with hempcrete wall infill, combined with lime-based finishes and natural insulation materials throughout. These choices significantly reduce embodied carbon, regulate internal humidity, and deliver excellent thermal performance without reliance on complex mechanical systems.
 

Sustainability was presented not as an add-on, but as an integral part of the planning case: long-life materials, low operational energy demand, and a healthy internal environment aligned closely with local planning objectives for responsible development. The clarity of this approach proved instrumental in securing consent on a site that might otherwise have been considered unsuitable.
 

The completed house demonstrates how sensitive architectural judgement, allied to sustainable materials and construction principles, can unlock challenging plots and deliver durable, comfortable homes with a light environmental footprint.
